We know its a been quite a while since we have been in touch with you. The difficulties of securing an affordable lease on the High Street for a temporary creative hub has been rather a challenge, and we have had a lot of competition for bidding for viable spaces, which has meant we have had to keep this very top secret until the deal was done!
As of 31 May, we have the keys to 3 – 5 High Street, what was Denman’s Electrical Shop next to the Station pub. It is a large space with a car park and can host a variety of possibilities – exhibitions and events and workshops and more.
The next step is getting the building into a safe state for public access and if anyone would like to volunteer to help us with this it would be greatly appreciated. We will also be setting up some sessions to paint the inside of the venue and clear land at the back – please respond below or by email if you are happy to help in June.
Over the next few weeks, we will be planning how best to use the venue from July onwards. This is likely to include markets, exhibitions, making and using the space. If you have specific ideas about how you would like to use the space please let us know. We still have all the notes from the brainstorming sessions which we will continue to use to guide us – but we want this to be a space for our local creative community so your views count.
We also plan to talk to existing local arts organisations – like Made in Kings Heath, Birmingham Open Studios, Trad Arts Team, Art Works and others – to see how we can help promote and complement their offer.
Other more general early plans include a joint arts event with The Station on 3rd August and we also plan to use the venue to creatively celebrate the annual Street Festival on 9th September.
There are many people in Kings Heath who are active artists, graphic designers, fabric artists, jewellers, performers, potters, stained glass makers, photographers, poets, makers, crafters, story tellers and so much more.

We’re refreshing our website with a new, more streamlined look that should make it easier for you to find what we’re up to. The new theme works well on both mobile and desktop displays. It’s still got a few tweaks to work out, but overall, this is our new look!
We are writing to you with an update on the status of the Christmas lights in Kings Heath this year. As you are probably aware, the reason we began this crowdfunding page is because we were informed that the normal way in which the Christmas lights are funded in KH was not going to be possible in 2017.
The Kings Heath Business Improvement District (BID) would normally fund the lights, so when their representatives informed us back in September that they wouldn’t be able to fund the lights this year we set about raising the funds with the help of the community. However, since September there have been some changes at the BID and we are delighted to say that they are now in a position to fund the lights as normal. We are thrilled that they are putting on the lights as their budget means there will be more lights in Kings Heath than we could have realistically provided.
This means that your generous pledges are no longer going to be needed for the lights in Kings Heath this year, so we are giving all pledgers the option to have their money refunded in full. If you are happy for us to use your pledge towards future events and community activity in Kings Heath, then we would be delighted to put this money to good use. We are already planning the Kings Heath Festive Frolic on Saturday 16th December (see more on our FB / Twitter pages) and other events will follow.
We cannot refund the money directly through the crowdfunder website, so if you would like the refund please email firstname.lastname@example.org and we will arrange the refund for you. If you are happy for us to use the money for other events there is no need to do anything. We would like to get all this tied up as soon as possible so we will assume that if we haven’t heard from you by the end of Tuesday 5th December that you are happy for us to use the money for other community events.
Thanks again for your support with this project, we feel that this project helped to ensure the lights in KH in 2017 and without your support it wouldn’t have been possible.
From the Kings Heath Community Interest Company
We think Kings Heath is in need of a great event to get the community together during this festive time of year, so the Kings Heath CIC is hosting the inaugural Kings Heath Festive Frolic in the Village Square.
There will be live music, street food, craft stalls, children’s entertainment, street performers and plenty of festive cheer.
Please join us for this free event that will light up Kings Heath this Christmas. #LightUpKH
